How this reading is made
The stones are scattered inside the leather pouch using cryptographically secure randomness. Mixing moves them with two-dimensional physics in your browser. Because every stone is face down, you make the selection without seeing the runes. Nothing is chosen in advance.
The position and rotation of a stone are frozen when you pick it up. Stones that lay close together are marked to be read together.
Where the process comes from: around 98 CE, Tacitus describes marked pieces cast at random onto a white cloth and three selected by a person. He does not call the marks runes. The Hole/Svingerud fragments come from a context dated broadly from 50 BCE to 275 CE, which does not establish whether a particular early carving came before or after his account. The historical source documents the selection process, not the meanings people use today. Here, the selection is likewise your action.
Reversed meanings are a modern convention. The three surviving rune poems contain no separate verses for reversed runes, and nine runes are symmetrical, with no distinct reversed orientation. They are identified as such and are never given a reversed reading.
This tool uses the 24-character Elder Futhark because modern rune-reading traditions usually attach their meanings to that alphabet. It is not the 16-character Younger Futhark used during much of the Viking Age.
What runes cannot do: diagnoses, legal or financial advice, statements about other people. This tool serves self-reflection and entertainment.
About this tool
This free rune reading does not select a result in advance. All 24 Elder Futhark stones begin face down in a leather pouch on the cloth. Use the on-screen hand to mix them, then choose the runes without seeing their signs. Each stone keeps its orientation and its position near other stones, so your interaction remains part of the reading.
How to use it
- Choose the Daily Rune, Three Norns, or Rune Cross layout.
- Move the on-screen hand through the pouch to mix the face-down stones.
- Switch to Pick up, then click or tap the stones you want.
- Use the positions, neighboring runes, and overall pattern as prompts for reflection.

This tool borrows one clear feature from that account: you mix hidden pieces and select the runes without seeing them. The interpretations are a modern reflective practice, separate from the history of runic writing.

Reversed meanings are a modern convention and are off by default. Nine symmetrical signs are not assigned a separate reversed meaning. Ralph Blum’s blank rune, introduced in 1982, is optional and also off by default.
