Adult party games, clearly explained

5 Drinking Games with Easy, Flexible Rules

These five games are for adults age 21 and older. Every one also works with water, soda, points, or no drinking rule at all.

Water and other drinks set out on a table for an adult game night

House rules vary, so agree on the game before you begin—and make “pass” a complete answer.

Alcohol is never required. The questions, votes, and card draws still work when you use points or alcohol-free drinks.

5 drinking games you can start tonight

These versions focus on the actual game, without shots, chugging, speed rounds, or required amounts.

Truth or Drink
no supplies

Ask the next player a truth question. They can answer, pass, or take whatever alcohol-free alternative your group agreed on.

Use the questions in Truth or Dare, and keep every answer optional.

Never Have I Ever
ten fingers

Read a “Never have I ever” prompt. Anyone who has done it lowers a finger or marks a point; stories are welcome but never required.

The online game includes 214 prompts and a ten-finger counter.

Most Likely To
group vote

Read a question, count to three, and point to the person who fits it best. The player with the most votes gets a point—or simply reads the next card.

Draw from 250 questions in Most Likely To.

Ship, Captain, Crew
5 dice

Roll up to three times, setting aside a 6 for the ship, then a 5 for the captain, and then a 4 for the crew. Only after collecting them in that order do the remaining two dice count as cargo.

Highest cargo wins the round. Keep points or move on without a penalty; the online dice roller supplies all five dice.

Twenty-One
no supplies

Count around the group from 1 to 21. On a turn, say one, two, or three consecutive numbers. Whoever says 21 chooses one harmless number rule for the next round.

There are many house versions. Agree on direction changes, skips, and replacement words before the round begins.

Just as fun without alcohol

Choose how your group marks a turn

The game should create conversation and surprises—not decide how much anyone drinks.

Keep points
Mark one point after a lost round, then reset whenever the group agrees.
Use alcohol-free drinks
Keep the turn structure and put water, soda, or another alcohol-free option on the table.
Skip the consequence
Move straight to the next player. Nothing else about the game has to change.

If alcohol is present

Keep the game fun—not pressured

Alcohol is never required. You can use water, soda, points, or another alcohol-free rule instead. Make every drink and every turn optional, and never ask someone to explain why they are not drinking.

If people age 21 or older choose to drink, slow the pace, eat, alternate with water, and plan a safe ride home. Anyone under 21 or pregnant should not drink. Leave out chugging, shots, speed rounds, and any rule that makes someone drink more to stay in the game. Read current guidance from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the CDC.

Frequently asked questions

Do these games work without alcohol?

Yes. Use points, fingers, water, or soda. The questions, votes, counting, and dice rules stay the same.

Which games need no supplies?

Truth or Drink, Never Have I Ever, Most Likely To, and Twenty-One can start with nothing but the group. Ship, Captain, Crew uses five dice or the online dice roller.

Can someone skip a turn?

Always. Passing should not trigger a penalty or a demand for an explanation.

Why do the rules for Twenty-One vary?

It is a house-rule game. Counting to 21 is the shared idea; direction changes, skipped players, and replacement words vary by group.
