The rune poems describe the sun as something seen, followed, and depended on. The Old English poem calls it a source of hope to seafarers until the horse of the sea brings them to land. Nordic verses describe the sun as the light of the world and the destroyer of ice. These images support direction and life-giving clarity without turning the rune into a guarantee of victory.

The same character also has a modern political history: a derived double form became the SS emblem, and that distinction matters for tattoos and public display.

The name and its history

Reconstructed sōwilō means sun. Its descendants include Old Norse sól and Old English sigel. In Norse myth the sun is personified as female, but that mythic setting should not be confused with a fixed divination definition.

Elder Futhark evidence includes angular and zigzag variants of the sign. Letter-shape variation across inscriptions is normal. The later paired SS emblem selected a particular modernized form and context; it does not erase the much older writing character.

What the rune poems emphasize

The Old English poem calls the sun a hope for seafarers until their vessel reaches land: sunlight made orientation possible. The Norwegian verse calls it the world’s light. The Icelandic poem names it the clouds’ shield, shining glory, and destroyer of ice.

The sources therefore support visibility, orientation, and warmth more directly than generalized victory. A modern reading can ask what has become clear and what can move once cold obstruction ends, while avoiding promises of inevitable success.

Sowilo points to a clear reference point. A goal, fact, or value may be visible enough to orient the next move. Like the sun used by a traveler, clarity is useful because it helps maintain direction over time.

Do not stare at the symbol and call that progress. Translate the reference point into navigation: where are you, what course follows, and what evidence will tell you that you drifted?

What the rune says — and why there is only one position

Sowilo is point-symmetrical in the displayed form, so a 180-degree turn produces the same character. This guide uses one position rather than assigning an invisible reversal a separate meaning.

Clarity can still expose an unwelcome fact, and intense focus can become glare or overconfidence. Read those tensions from the situation and adjacent runes, not from an orientation the sign does not display.

Sowilo in four areas of life

Love. Shared values can orient a relationship, but clarity includes hearing an answer you did not expect.

Work. Define success and the metric that supports it. Visibility and praise are not substitutes for a sustainable pace.

Money. Use transparent numbers and explicit goals. The rune does not forecast a winning investment.

Well-being. Daylight, routine, and energy may be useful themes, while symptoms and treatment belong with health professionals.

Sowilo, the sig rune, and the SS

In 1902, Guido von List created his own 18-character Armanen rune row. He derived its “Sig rune” from Sowilo and linked the name to Sieg, the German word for victory. In 1933, the SS adopted two such forms side by side as its emblem.

The Anti-Defamation League lists that double sign as SS Bolts, a common white supremacist and neo-Nazi symbol derived from Sowilo. The listing concerns the paired SS sign. A single Sowilo remains a historical character that is more than a thousand years older than the SS appropriation.

The practical distinction is the complete design. One Sowilo in a runic inscription is not the double SS emblem. Two bolt-like Sowilo forms side by side—especially in a tattoo, logo, or badge—will be read through their Nazi and neo-Nazi use.
